Aloha everyone! I saw that nobody posted about Soul Surfer, so I thought I’d fix that!
Soul Surfer was the best movie that came out this year, at least in my opinion!
To say I LOVED the movie would be an understatement. I LOVE it, but even more than that, I connected with Bethany’s story. Like Bethany, I too lost a part of my body at a very young age. Just like Bethany, despite the loss of my right eye, I never lost my faith in God or gave up trying to make my dreams come true.
I had wanted to see this movie ever since I first saw the previews for it while watching Degrassi a week before Easter. After reading up on the movie through Plugged in, I knew I had to see it!
After seeing the previews for the movie and reading a few reviews on it, I decided to try and find the book in an accessible format. The minute I started reading it, I was immediately transported to Hawaii and I found myself identifying with Bethany. I was so grabbed by the book, I ended up finishing it in one night! I loved it so much, I read it all the way through two more times!
For those of you who aren’t familiar with Bethany Hamilton’s story, I’ll explain…
Bethany Hamilton was just 13-years-old when her dreams of becoming a pro surfer were changed one day while surfing with her best friend, Alana, Alana’s father and brother. The two girls were just talking about this and that when Bethany suddenly felt a tug on her left arm. As she gazed down, she discovered that the water around her and Alana was quickly turning red. It was only when she focused in on the spot did she see the grey dorsal fin of a shark swimming away. A fourteen-inch tiger shark to be exact. Despite losing her left arm to the shark, Bethany maintained a strong faith in God and went on to become a champion surfer. She is an inspiration to me and many other people due to her courage and perseverance. Not once during her whole ordeal did she give up on God or herself. She also never stopped inspiring others or stopped reaching for her dream in the process. I highly recommend this movie to everyone! I’ve seen it four times and it’s touched me every time. I can’t wait until it comes out on DVD!
